Chapter 16

Morashi

Fariq had a new pouch made for Chance in a couple days. I sat with him in the innovation workshop, practically trembling with the desire to wander the odds and ends in the bins around us. But I had a bit of self-control, enough to know my belt was full for now and that some of my peers whispered about me. Between the mouse and the modified belt where I kept many things, just in case, my oddities were showing.

“I think he likes it,” I said after Chance enthused that his new pouch was very comfy, I sleep here, yes yes. It was modified from a coin purse, neat stitches along the bottom and sides of the cloth giving more support to its structure. Fariq had found some leftover fur that now lined the inside and made a little bed for Chance. Instead of a drawstring top, it had a flap of loose fabric so he could come and go.

“Amazing how expressive he is,” he said, watching Chance poke his head out of it and bobble in delight.

“Yeah,” I murmured. “Hey, Fariq?”

“Hmm?”

I searched for a way to put the direction of my thoughts into words. I’d thought all my problems would be solved once I was properly in a team, but so far, all I’d noticed was that Carmen had lost a measure of respect for Vance now that she’d seen his real face. Over the course of the last couple days, Fariq and I spent our time working on the newly increased requirements for our group projects while the two of them bickered like kids half their ages.

And Margot, well, she was no help because she wasn’t in any of our classes. I hadn’t seen a single blonde curl since she pointed out how I’d wiggled out of sharing where I came from with the group.

“Do you think we’re gonna make it?” I asked.

He regarded me for a while with a lifted brow. I suppose for someone as gifted as him, there was no question about his future. If he wasn’t a spy, he could be any number of other things. I was asking for myself, because I didn’t see a line of employers looking for skills like mine.

“What do you mean?” he said finally.

“Our new team. Do you think it will make it?”

“Ah. Seeing the future is for the gods.” He shrugged. “Vance and Carmen are missing something…a reason to be here. Something to believe in when the going gets hard. Without that, they have not even taken the first step to, well, making it.”

“They’re going to bring us down with them,” I said.

“Maybe they will. But our team isn’t on the ranking boards, and no real jobs are at stake. Next year, or even sooner, there will be a new team. But I hope you’re not giving up on them yet. We’ve hardly started working together. Vance has gotten a lot better.”

“Really?”

“Mmhmm. He would change his face to a different person every day, trying to leave. When that didn’t work, he made a deal with the peacekeeper…the one with, ah.
